iVillage's Top 9 Salads That Will Make You Fat

Applebee's Oriental Chicken Salad

At 1,300 calories, this salad has "about twice as many calories as most people need in one sitting," says dietitian Keith Ayoob, author of The Uncle Sam Diet. A smarter choice is to order the half-salad version and ask the kitchen to hold the dressing. That's 320 calories with 620mg of sodium.

Outback Steakhouse Queensland Salad

Even without dressing this salad is 839 calories, with 1,176mg of sodium. A combo of chicken salad with Monterey Jack and Cheddar, bacon, diced egg, tomatoes, toasted almonds and croutons. And the other choices are just as bad. "People think a salad is an automatic thumbs up," says Ayoob. "The problem is that the devil is in the condiments, dressings, and add-ons like the bacon bits, croutons, and fried crunchies, which are loaded with salt and probably extra calories." A slightly better choice is the shrimp Caesar Salad, made with romaine and shrimp from the barbie, which clocks in at 713 calories and 1555mg of sodium.

Chili's Quesadilla Explosion Salad

This is an aptly named salad, since the "calories and sodium are explosive," says Ayoob. It contains 1,400 calories and a whopping 2,360mg of sodium, more than your recommended daily allotment. "That's simply ridiculous, whether you have hypertension or not," say Ayoob. It also packs in 88g of fat, about the same amount of fat as an entire stick of butter. A better choice: One cup of black bean soup (150 calories and 740mg of sodium) and a house salad with low-fat ranch dressing: 150 calories with 570mg of sodium.

Taco Bell Chicken Ranch Taco Salad

With 960 calories (510 of which are from fat!) and 1,660mg of sodium, the Taco Bell Chicken Ranch Taco Salad is another not-so-smart choice. But if you're lusting after some fast-food Mexican, try the Chalupa Supreme Chicken with 350 calories and 640mg sodium. If you have your heart seat on the Chicken Ranch Taco Salad, save one half of it for dinner, recommends Ayoob.
